What to Do After a Collision

Stop:

  • Pull off to the side of the road and put on your flashers.
  • Use flares or reflective triangles if you have them to warn other drivers.
  • Don’t approach a wounded animal; it may kick, bite or gore you.

Report it to your:

  • State wildlife agency
  • State transportation agency
  • Local Police
  • Insurance Company
  • Local wildlife rehabilitator (if the animal is injured)
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Note: Only contact them if you believe the animal is an endangered or imperiled species.)

Why call so many places? Wildlife and transportation agencies need to keep data on where wildlife-vehicle collisions occur.
