Defenders in Action: California Helps Preserve Channel Islands Ecosystem

The California Fish and Game Commission voted in October to create one of the largest marine reserves in the United States, banning fishing from 175 square miles of ocean around Santa Barbara’s Channel Islands. The decision came after more than four years of scientific study and public debate over how much area should be protected to ensure the future of its diverse marine ecosystem, which includes species such as sea otters and blue whales. Defenders Marine Program Associate Jim Curland has been working with other environmental leaders to preserve this important part of California’s marine biodiversity.

Scientists recommend that 30 percent to 50 percent of the waters around the Channel Islands be protected. Over the next two years, federal officials will decide whether to expand the reserve into federal waters, which begin three miles from shore. Defenders’ California program is working to ensure that the combined state and federal reserve reflects the scientists recommendations.
