Richard Whiteford
Pennsylvania & New Jersey Outreach Representative
Areas of expertise: Grassroots organizing, conservation issues
Richard is the Pennsylvania and New Jersey organizer on Defenders’ national outreach team. He works across both states with diverse grassroots constituencies and the media to increase public support for wildlife conservation and to mobilize citizen advocates. Richard joined Defenders in 2006, opening a new Defenders office in Philadelphia. He also recently completed Al Gore’s training to be a certified presenter for his movie, An Inconvenient Truth. To date, Richard has done over 80 global warming presentations.
Before joining Defenders, Richard worked in 2005 as the Director of the Important Mammal Areas Project. Other positions have included Northeast Region Conservation Organizer for the National Sierra Club; Outreach Coordinator for the Highlands Coalition, focusing on watersheds in the northeast; and Mid-Atlantic Campaign Manager for the Wilderness Society’s Land Water Conservation Fund campaign. Richard has written over 500 environment-related articles, including a three-year series about endangered species for the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer. His book, Wild Pennsylvania, was published in 2006 by Voyageur Press.
Richard has a B.S. in Communications from Saint Joseph’s University.
