Marcia Lesky oversees the Defenders team of organizers, working across the country to increase public support for wildlife conservation and mobilize citizen advocates. She came to Defenders in 2005 to create the new outreach program. Working with the lobby team, Marcia strategically designs efforts to organize key individuals, organizations, and businesses in targeted areas to augment Defenders’ legislative work in Washington, DC. Marcia creates outreach materials, including Citizen Advocate Handbook: Your guide to protecting America’s wildlife; conducts trainings and presentations; and has developed a Citizen Advocacy Academy to help create citizen advocate leaders across the country. Marcia also completed Al Gore’s training to be a certified presenter for his movie, An Inconvenient Truth.
Prior to joining Defenders, Marcia managed field and outreach campaign activities at the National Parks Conservation Association. She has also worked as a Population Policy Analyst for the National Wildlife Federation, and in the office of Congressman Amo Houghton (R-NY), and with the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. Marcia has published reports on various aspects of national park conservation and population policy and another guide for individual activists.
Marcia received her B.S. in Environmental Studies from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University, and her M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University.
